Von Thermopolis über Cody zum Buffalo Bill State Park

Am Morgen kommen wir durch Thermopolis. Heute ist Sonntag, und bei den dortigen heißen Quellen treffen wir auf eine große Oldtimer-Show. Auf einem Platz sind rd. 100 Autos aufgereiht, dazu laute Oldie-Musik. Das ist etwas für mich ! 

Nach über einer Stunde fahren wir weiter nach Cody, wo wir tanken (ab jetzt wird es teurer) und beim Walmart unsere Vorräte auffüllen.

Ein paar Meilen hinter Cody wird der Shoshone River zum Buffalo Bill Stausee aufgestaut. Entlang des Sees erstreckt sich der Buffalo Bill State Park mit zwei großen einfachen Campingplätzen. Hier bleiben wir heute, um früh am nächsten Morgen in den Yellowstone Park hineinfahren zu können. Die Sonne scheint, es ist warm, aber es stürmt leider so stark, dass man sich nicht draußen aufhalten kann.

From Thermopolis via Cody to Buffalo Bill State Park

In the morning we pass through Thermopolis. It is Sunday, and in front of the local hot spring we find a big oldtimer car parade. About 100 cars are lined up, and oldie music is playing loud. That is something for me ! 

More than an hour later we go on to Cody, where we fill up the gas tank (from now on it will get more expensive) and buy groceries.

A few miles west of Cody the Shoshone River is dammed for the Buffalo Bill Reservoir. Along the lake stretches Buffalo Bill State Park with two basic campgrounds. Here we stay overnight to enter Yellowstone National Park early next morning. The sun is shining, it's warm, but unfortunately the breeze is so strong that we have to stay inside the motorhome.

Quer durch Wyoming nach Thermopolis

Sehr früh am nächsten Morgen (16. Juni) brechen wir auf in Richtung Westen über sehr gute, leere Straßen durch eine interessante Landschaft. Von Custer geht es über Moorcroft und weiter auf der I-90 nach Buffalo. Unterwegs begegnet uns auf einer parallel verlaufenden Bahnstrecke einer dieser endlos langen Güterzüge, und wir nutzen die Gelegenheit, die Waggons zu zählen. Es sind 156, mit zwei Loks vorne und einer hinten.

Westlich von Buffalo geht es hoch in die Bighorn Mountains. Die Straße führt in 2.950 m Höhe über den Powder River Pass. Die Abfahrt bietet spektakuläre Aussichten. 

 

In Thermopolis landen wir im “Fountain of Youth RV Park“. Der Platz hat wenig zu bieten außer einem dreiteiligen Pool, der aus einer heißen Quelle gespeist wird. 

 

Across Wyoming to Thermopolis

Early next morning we leave westbound on very good and empty roads enjoying interesting scenery. From Custer the way leads via Moorcroft to Buffalo. On a parallel railroad track we see one of those never ending freight trains and use the opportunity to count the cars. It is 156, with two engines in the front and one in the rear.

West of Buffalo the road leads high up into the Bighorn Mountains and 9666 feet high over the Powder River Pass. The descent provides spectacular views.

In Thermopolis we end up at “Fountain of Youth RV Park“. The park does not have a lot to offer except a threepart pool that is fed by a hot spring.
