Im Glacier Nationalpark

22. Juni: Der Glacier Nationalpark hält nicht so ganz das, was wir erwartet hatten. Dafür gibt es mehrere Gründe. Es liegt sicher auch am Wetter; heute ist zum ersten Mal der Himmel dunkelgrau und es fallen sogar ein paar einzelne Tropfen. Wir fahren von West Glacier aus in den Park zum Visitor Center. Schon vorher wussten wir, dass die “Going-to-the-Sun-Road“ quer durch den Park nur für Fahrzeuge unter 21 ft Länge (3,30 m) zugelassen ist und wollten einen Shuttle-Bus bis zur Passhöhe in der Mitte und zurück benutzen. Aber der Bus fährt nur im Juli und August !

Die ersten 17 Meilen am McDonald-Lake entlang bis Avalanche dürfen wir noch fahren. Aber die Straße windet sich durch dichten Wald und gibt nur an ganz wenigen Stellen den Blick auf den See und die schneebedeckten Berge frei. Vor dem Verbotsschild nach 17 Meilen ist nur ein enger Wendekreis im Wald, der auch noch mit Pkw zugeparkt ist. Enttäuscht fahren wir wieder zurück; das war wohl nix. 

 

Hinzu kommt dass der Glacier N.P. für Europäer, die die Alpen kennen, natürlich nicht übermäßig aufregend ist. Und nach Yellowstone hält sich wahrscheinlich die Begeisterung ohnehin in Grenzen. Gut, dass wir wenigstens den NP-Jahrespass haben und nicht noch 25$ für die Einfahrt bezahlt haben.

Wir fahren nach Whitefish auf den dortigen State Park Campground am See, belegen einen Platz und fahren noch einmal eine Meile zurück nach Whitefish, einem ungewöhnlich schönen Ort, der natürlich auch wieder eine library mit Wlan hat. Um 16.30 Uhr ist plötzlich der Himmel wieder blau und die Sonne scheint. 

 

At Glacier National Park

June 22: Glacier National Park does not really keep what we had expected because of several reasons. One important reason is the weather; today for the first time the sky is dark grey and there are even a few rain drops. We enter the park from West Glacier. We alrady knew that the “Going-to-the-Sun-Road“ across the park is closed for vehicles longer than 21 ft. and were planning to take a shuttle bus to the summit in the middle and back. But the bus is operating only in July and August ! 
 

We can drive the first 17 miles along Lake McDonald to Avalanche. But the road winds through dense forest and allows only very few glimpses at the lake and the snow covered mountains. There is only a small circle for turning In front of the prohibition sign after 17 miles and that is mostly blocked by parked cars. Quite disappointed we return; that was not very successful.

Furthermore Glacier N.P. is not exceedingly exciting for Europeans who know the Alps. And so close after Yellowstone the enthusiasm is probably limited everywhere. Good we at least own the annual pass and did not pay $25 entry fee.

We continue to Whitefish, and after occupying a site on the State Park campground on the lake we return one mile to the village that is unusual nice, and it also has a library with Wifi. At 4.30 pm suddenly the sky is blue again and the sun is shining.
