South Dakota: Mt. Rushmore und Custer State Park

Am nächsten Morgen ist es nicht weit nach South Dakota. Wir fahren langsam durch den Wind Cave National Park und halten häufig an, um Tiere zu beobachten. Im Park leben u.a. mehrere Hundert Bisons. Wir haben Glück und bekommen einige zu sehen.

Direkt dahinter ist der Custer State Park ($15). Die enge Straße windet sich bergauf und bergab, auch mit Tunnels, durch eine schöne Landschaft. Am Ende gibt es die ersten Ausblicke auf Mt. Rushmore.

Am Mt. Rushmore ist großer Touristenrummel. Das Parken kostet $11, natürlich gibt es schon weit vorher keine Haltemöglichkeit. Aber der Anblick der aus dem Berg geformten Präsidentenköpfe ist schon beeindruckend. 

 

Auf dem Rückweg in den Custer SP kommen wir nachmittags an einem kleinen privaten campground gerade nordöstlich außerhalb des Custer State Parks vorbei, der uns gut gefällt (Wolf Camp). Hier bleiben wir für die Nacht. 

 

South Dakota: Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park

The next morning it is not far to South Dakota. We slowly go through Wind Cave National Park and stop frequently to watch the wildlife. There are several hundred bisons living in the park. We are lucky and get to see some of them.

Just north of it is the Custer State Park ($15). The narrow road is winding up and down the hills, even with tunnels, through a beautiful scenery. At the end there are the first glimpses of Mt. Rushmore.

At Mt. Rushmore there are masses of tourists. Parking there is $11, and of course there is no room for stopping long before. But the sight of the presidents heads carved out of the mountain is indeed impressing.

On our way back into the Custer SP In the afternoon we pass a small private campground just outside the park (northeast) that we like a lot (Wolf Camp). We stay here for the night and are the only guests.
